A Week in Pictures From Julie’s Jazz {Oct. 6th. to Oct. 12th.}

They were playing and they both fell asleep on the floor by the front door.  I was in the kitchen and noticed it was a little too quiet so I grabbed my camera.7-14-12s-7

Ben tried to take a nap on Will’s bed but Will, Dallas, and Charley had other plans.7-14-12s-5

Sam went to his homecoming dance on Saturday night. We always go to a place called Floral Art to get his corsages.  They do a fabulous job! 7-14-12s-6-300x176

Saturday night after Sam left I was moping around because I didn’t know what I wanted to make for dinner.  Ben had an idea for us to watch the first couple of minutes of a “Chopped” episode for inspiration.  We would watch to see the first four ingredients, stop the recording, go to the store, buy ingredients that were as close as possible to the show, and then see what I could come up with. Just for fun! The ingredients were mahi mahi (I used halibut), candy cane beets (I used regular red beets), verjus (I used white wine vinegar), and olive loaf.7-14-12s-8

It was a fun little experiment.  On the show the time for the appetizer round is 20 minutes.  It took me 60!  I made the olive loaf into a sort of mousse/puree that I spread on toasted baguette rounds.  I topped them with pickled beets, chopped poached halibut and an orange beurre blanc.  My orange butter sauce and mousse both had slight bitter after tastes.  But the appetizer was edible and the challenge was fun.7-14-12s-9

This is a view from the parking lot of the Cabela’s in Lehi, UT. We took a day trip there last Friday. It was a casual, peaceful, and enjoyable day!photo
