I dream about being one of those people who consume food exclusively for fuel and because they’ll die if they don’t. I fantasize about exclaiming things like, “Oh my gosh! I’m starving! I just realized I haven’t eaten anything at all today!” and “Sometimes I just forget to eat. Eating is such a pain in the butt!”
Unfortunately the conversations that actually go on in my head go more like, “I wonder if there’s a way to make oatmeal and plain Greek yogurt taste like chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream and contain exactly 10 g. of carbohydrates, 25 g. of protein, and 3 g. of fat?”
I’ve been doing more weight training lately. So I’m consumed with finding more ways to sneak protein into my diet.
Grilled chicken and chocolate protein powder are great. But day after day they can get tiresome.
Protein bread has always seemed like a pretty interesting concept to me. I haven’t found many pre-packaged high protein breads in stores or online. One I have found, P28 High Protein Bread, is actually pretty incredible. And, if a store in my area sold it I’d probably not worry about making my own. But, here in Idaho Falls, ID, I have to order it online. With shipping, a loaf of this bread can end up costing me over $10. For the record, I’ve paid that much for this bread, and it was worth it. But, it’s not in my budget to buy it all the time.
This brings me to Andréa’s Protein Cakery.
I wanted to try this “Basic Protein Bread” recipe because it had the highest amount of protein for the least amount of calories. Although, I did notice in the post that the creator of the recipe mentions a better tasting version for a few more carbs.
I knew it wasn’t going to taste exactly like a light and airy slice of bleached white Wonder bread. One look at the ingredients made me wonder how it could even resemble bread in any way.
It rose and browned in the oven just like I dreamed it might. But then it fell a minute or two later. This didn’t surprise me in the least. I was still able to slice it, toast it, and slather it with peanut butter!
Its consistency was spongy and it had a distinct egg flavor.
Like all food substitutes, this bread didn’t taste like the real deal. But I never expected it to. I don’t expect veggie burgers to taste like ground beef. I don’t expect almond milk to taste like milk from a cow. I love finding new foods that help me reach my nutritional needs and goals, that taste great, and that pair well with peanut butter!
This Basic Protein Bread is a fantastic protein packed play on bread. Especially for people who are trying to increase their protein intake. Its possibilities are exciting and I can wait to try more recipes and products from Andréa’s Protein Cakery!
