I was listening to Dear Sugar Radio (one of my favorite podcasts) yesterday and a listener said he/she was going on a backpacking trip and asked Cheryl Strayed if she had any advice.
Sheryl told the listener that backpacking was “Retrospectively Fun.”
She said something to the effect of, “While your hiking it’s pretty horrible and hard. But, when you’re finished and look back it will have seemed fun!”
It reminded me of how Ben sometimes views hard situations or activities. Like if we’re outside and it’s super cold he’ll talk about how much we’ll appreciate being in our nice warm house when we’re done with whatever we are doing.
Or sometimes, if we’re in a situation or place we don’t particularly want to be, he’ll ask me if I wished I was in a situation or place much worse.
Only, he’ll describe the worse situation or place.
For example: If we’re on our way home in the car and we’ve been running around all day and we’re tired and cranky, he’ll say, “Do you wish we were just leaving Boise to come home and we still have 4.5 hrs of driving and Will is 12 months old and he won’t stop crying the entire way home?” (He actually did cry all the way home once, from a day trip to Butte Montana.)
For a long time I felt this way about working out. Like it was super hard and miserable while I was working out and as soon as I was done I would feel amazing! Now I love workouts. I like the anticipation of them, getting ready for them, the actual workout itself, and the way I feel after. I enjoy the entire process.
I had to get through a lot of miserable hours before I fell in love with each phase of the workout process.
But, until then, the physical and mental feelings I got out of it were worth the misery!
